Pam’s Liberty, 2021

I made this memory sculpture for my mum after her cancer returned. It was to remind her (and me) of our shared love and passion for Liberty London fabric, her teaching me to sew, and the many hours of time we spent discussing and making.

I became compelled to make this sculpture following my mother’s latest cancer diagnosis in April, 2021. This sculpture was partly a comment on mum’s increasing lack of liberty. But mainly it was to show her what an incredible and interesting journey her life had been, and the fabulous people she had befriended along the way.

The choice to only use Liberty print fabrics was deliberate as we have both had a lifelong love of Liberty designs and colours. One of the first items of clothing I made as a young girl was a Liberty print skirt. My mum taught me to sew - she patiently taught me how to cut out the fabric, read and follow the sewing instructions, and help when I (regularly) went wrong.

The fabric origami flowers at the base represent mum’s love of her garden and flowers are, of course, the basis for many Liberty fabric designs.

Most of the Liberty fabrics in this sculpture were gifted to me by my mum, and as I was making it, I felt like we were sitting around the same table having a conversation and creating something together, despite the fact that she was in Australia and I was in London.

Following my mum’s death in July 2021, this sculpture reminds me how much my mum is/was loved, as well as the fascinating ability of fabric to recall memories and emotions.
