Mim & Ali’s Afternoon Tea (Towel) Party, 2024

My friend Mim donated offcuts from her sister Ali’s beautiful Australian tea towel designs.

Envisaging the sharing of food and drink, I created an abstract ‘grove’, where dappled sunlight, gently swaying fronds and tea towel bunting create a dreamy, inviting and irresistible scene to sit, chat, sip, chill and relax…

For the first time I have used free motion embroidery to create abstract elements on this sculpture. This is a fascinating process whereby you use your sewing machine to create thread ‘drawings’ onto water soluble fabric and then you dissolve the fabric and are left with the threads. There was a lot of trial and error - quite a lot of error to be honest - as you need to ensure the threads are ‘joined’ to others to keep their structure and shape.

Mim & Ali’s Afternoon Tea (Party), Cotton tea towel offcuts, thread, wooden beads, miniature porcelain tea set, wooden brooch, crinoline tube, millinery wire, aluminium, wood, nails, plaster.
